Gomukh Trek


Gomukh is a part of the Gangotri glacier. It is located in the Garhwal region of Himalayas in Uttarkashi district. Gomukh trek is just 18 km away from Gangotri. Gomukh is the origin of the holy River Bhagirathi and is also one of the most important source of River Ganga.
It is situated at an elevation of 13,200 meters above the sea level.  You won’t realize how large this magnificent glacier is, until you see it with your own eyes. But before going on this trek you will have to take the permission of the District Forest Officer of Uttarkashi. It is not a complicated process, the permission is required because only 150 permits can be issued in a day. So you have nothing to worry about, if you are not late to take permit then you will definitely be trekking without any tension. You will be amazed and the view of this gigantic glacier will leave you awestruck.
According to the Puranas, it is believed that once in the ancient times a shepherd boy had lost one of his sheep. So, while he was searching for it he got to see this huge glacier which looked just like the mouth of a cow and from then onwards this place was named Gomukh. Since then this place got famous and religious people and saints started to visit here to worship this place. Gomukh is the mouth of one of the largest glacier of Himalayas named Gangotri glacier.
The trek to Gomukh is moderate to difficult. Gradually the trek route difficulty level increases with the acsendingtrail. Beginners can hardly do this trek ahead of Gomukh. This place is on the top of the list of professional trekkers because this is one of the challenging trek. Adventure seekers and nature lovers must go on this trek. This trek requires great stamina and mental stability so you should be prepared before going on this trek.

Trek Route Of Gomukh Trek

This trek is suitable for experienced trekkers and not for every person. But if you believe that you will be able to complete the trek then no one can stop you. Minimum time you will spend in this trek is 9 days. Firstly you will have to gather in Dehradun from there you will take a ride to Uttarkashi. After Uttarkashi you will be driving to Gangotri, then you will be trekking to Chirbasa from Gangotri. From Chirbasa trek  to Bhojwasa  after which you will reach your destination Gomukh. You will returning from the same route from where you came, trek back to Bhojwasa and from there to Chibasa. From Chirbasa you will be trekking back to Gangotri, from where you will be driving to Uttarkashi and then to your homes.
